Welcome to Virginia Historical Markers

Welcome to the mother site of all of the research done by history students at the University of Mary Washington.  This project is one which aims to educate the public on the historical highway markers of Virginia just a few counties at a time.  Often, when driving past such markers, two questions cross your mind: what did that say and what is its story? Well, those questions are what these students have answered for you.  We hope that future students taking Jeffrey McClurken’s Digital History course will expand upon this information and eventually, UMW will have a fully functioning database on all of the historical highway markers in Virginia!
