VIRGINIA HISTORIC STATE MARKERS GROUP ANNOUNCES LAUNCH OF WEBSITE

Fredericksburg, Virginia April 5th, 2012:

The Virginia Historic State Markers Group is proud to announce the creation, and launch of sevamarkers.umwblogs.org. “The purpose of our work at the Virginia Historic State Markers Group, is to provide information regarding the history, significance, and location of the state historic markers of the greater Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown, Yorktown, and Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania, and Stafford areas of Virginia” – Lindsey Smith (Chief Officer of Marker Image and Editing Operations)

The website, sevamarkers.umwblogs.org, includes original images of the markers, with the text of their inscriptions, and in-depth further research of the topic. These aspects are complemented with a map, created through Google, which pinpoints the exact locations of each marker. A timeline is also included, that allows visitors of the website to comprehend the historic scope of these markers, which range from the early 17th century to the beginning of the 20th century.

Virginia’s range of history is perhaps the most unique of all 50 states. The early colonial activities of Jamestown, and the climactic moments of the Revolutionary and Civil Wars all took place in Virginia, and their sites and history have been well preserved. The creation of sevamarkers.umwblogs.org has enhanced the method in which this information can be accessed and processed, as well as providing the precise marker location.

A special thanks should be extended to Dr. Jeffrey McClurken, who established the premise upon which this website was founded, to Jim Groom, who offered invaluable technical advice, and to our classmates in the Seminar on Digital Histories in Technology, who have provided priceless and consistent feedback regarding the purpose of this project.
